French drain AKA ditch

Before we could do a more visually satisfying home improvement project like paint the kitchen, Scott forced us to do the responsible thing and install a boring French drain before the fall rains. Its fancy European name is misleading as a French drain is basically a type of drainage ditch with pipe.

A French drain - as they used to build them in France, is just an open trench filled with rock. No pipe. Nothing more than a place for water to sit, hidden, until it can seep into the ground below.

A tile drain is a pipe buried underground to capture and take the water elsewhere.

What you have is a combo of the two. And the best way to go.
